Sofia Project: Computational geometry

Spanning the fields of structural engineering, image processing and machine learning, Sofia Project is the platform to showcase the various facets of our research on the generation of data driven geometry.

Research & Development

Chadstone gridshell roof

Computation of the roof’s structural geometry with global optimisation for planar quadrangular panels.

Deep Form Finding

Implementation of Variational Autoencoders for generating novel building typologies.  Publications and
Workshop held at AAG2018 - Advances in Architectural Geometry. Chalmers University, Gothenburg.

Multimodal Image Registration of Old Masters Paintings

PhD thesis on image processing for the Arts.
Research conducted at Imperial College London in conjunction with National Gallery London.

Academic Cases Studies

Here, a selection of case studies is presented with a description of their structural strategies, diagrams and 3D files of their representative geometry in Rhino/Grasshopper/Karamba3D.

Centre Pompidou (Renzo Piano & Richard Rogers, 1977)

Brief analysis of the frame-sets that confer overall stiffness to this building.

Shard (Renzo Piano, 2012)

Structural diagrams exploring a set of 3 floors as a simple implementation of column-beam-column strategy.

Iglesia Cristo Obrero (Eladio Dieste, 1952)

The sinusoidal walls and roof serve as example of a simple box with folded surfaces, enhancing the structural performance of this building.

Stadelhofen Railway Station (Santiago Calatrava, 1981)

Structural diagrams exploring the balustrade  a series of elements working in bending.

Forth Bridge (Baker & Fowler, 1890)

Structural diagrams exploring the fundamental principles behind this cantilever bridge.

Millenium Bridge (Foster + Partners, 2000)

This pedestrian, steel suspension bridge accross the river Thames in London presents a series of ribs of variable amplitude. These are connected throughout transversal cables at each end, set in tension from the two anchor points at either margin of the river, and two abutments accross its span.

British Museum’s Great Court Gridshell roof (Foster + Partners, 2000)

Structural diagrams exploring the fundamental principles behind this gridshell roof.

Kings Cross Station Gridshell roof (McAslan + Partners, 2012)

Structural diagrams exploring the fundamental principles behind this gridshell roof.

Yoshimura Origami Pattern (roof exercise, unbuilt project)

Algorithmic implementation of this origami pattern.

Simple Catenary (roof exercise, unbuilt project)

Algorithmic implementation of a simple catenary surface.
